I absolutely agree with the article "Not Petting Gaboon vipers". This should be posted in a more accessible site, with big yellow and black flashing lights over it. I do not think any "hot" snake in the hobby is as underestimated as Bitis gabonica. And it's probably one of the more common "pet" venomous.
For such a dangerous animal, a hell of a lot of people sure want to keep one and I doubt a lot of them know what they are getting themselves into! One of my favourite anecdotes about this species is related in Ludwig Trutnau's "Venomous Snakes: Snakes in the terrarium". One Dr. Sergei Ryabov was bitten in the middle finger by a Gaboon. His immediate reaction was to have the member chopped off with an axe. Says it all, really. |
