OK guys I was day dreaming away to myself, should have been studying
, and was trying to work out this potential situation.A person from the Irish Republic goes to Northern Ireland or Britain too pick up a DWA animal there to bring back to the Republic. Now we have no such legislation or licencing yet covering dangerous reptiles and most mammals, once you can care for it adaquately and it isn't crazy like a lion or an elephant, to my knowlegde. Do they need a DWA licence to get the animal under British law even if it is to be immediately brought to the Republic of Ireland? I know I have far too much time on my hands. I only mention because I'm sure that such animals are transported across the border and legally it's very interesting. ![]() |

yeah, does the DWA govern the sale of the animal or is a licence to keep it.
If it is legally required for a sale then we would need them. If it is to govern who keeps them we wouldn't, we wouldn't be living in the UK and therefore it dosn't apply to us. At least that was my logic. Our animal importation and care laws are quite liberal/stupid. The city I live in has 70,000 people and 1 dog warden .The thing, is it is possible to go to Britain without passing an Irish customs check, drive to Larne, take the ferry to Stranrer. Because there are no border checks anymore, thank you Good Friday, and if you took a ferry from one part of the UK to another there would be no major customs checks. (or is my theory woefully wrong and easily picked apart?) Last edited by Emerald Serpent; 26-04-2008 at 02:12 PM. |

Thanks, I was wondering if that would apply. As far as I know the few hots kept in the Republic generally come from Britain or Hamm before it stopped selling them. I have only heard anecdotes and never seen a venomous snake kept or on sale here myself. I still think there is a grey area of the North, the border is a smugglers paradise. So I wasn't so sure about whether there was an import/export issue. any other comments on this are welcome .Last edited by Emerald Serpent; 26-04-2008 at 02:20 PM. |

Surely the Republic of ireland is a EEC state and therefore you would not need any paperwork.....
As in you'd can (or could) buy Hots in Hamm and bring them back to the Uk without any cross border paperwork??? Over to you......... but thats my thinking |

My thoughts exactly, peole bring herps over from hamm & Houten without export paperwork. If you're buying hots at EU shows, you only need to show evidence of the appropriate DWA licence if/when stopped by UK customs. The licence permits you to buy and keep the specified animals in the UK.
I would agree that as a country with an existing licensing system it would be prudent of a seller not to sell directly to a non-resident, but to ship to the buyers address, thereby preventing, or at least going some way toward preventing a non licence holder from getting hold of a DWA via this method. i.e getting a friend from the EU to buy the animal for you. |

My PSL documentation states that if selling a DWA animal the license must be seen before sale, and photocopied and the address of the buyer kept on record. It doesn't make any mention of if the person is not within the UK and therefore not applicable... I think you'd have to phone the council of the area you were purchasing from, and also double check with all the transporters that they would be willing to carry a DWA animal, you may well find that it's quite hard to get across, although I know people do it for Hamm from the E.
