excellent snake, one question, why are you helping drink, is it recovering from illness or something, or are you just doing it because you can ; )

Thanks for the question.

They don't drink from water dished but will drink from their scales if you stand there and spray them down for 30 mins so they get a reasonable amount of water. I don't have 30 min to stand there so I work with every snake in my collection this way as long they "relax" and drink from the pipett without trying to kill me. I even do this with the Mambas with is rather tricky

Just be clear on this point, Venomous snakes are never TAME, they are just permissive of certain keeper/snake interactions. These Horned Adders are minature Puff Adders, so they are rather pissy most of the time. It's all about building a relationship with your animal, done correctly they will allow certain actions taken to NOT be seen as a threat to their safety. The Purps see everything as an opportunity to bite the snot out of you, so they are actually easy because they will always strike. It's the snakes like "Spot" that are actually the tricky ones. Please don't try this at home as it can get ugly if someone is having a "bad hair day"

Cheers!

Ah ha! I was thinking bout that too. Is this a trait of all hots, or just certain species?

Thanks everybody for the meaningful questions . I get so fried from basic stupidity and ignorance of US forum inhabitants. Now for your answer....

I have a postulate which I call "Scale drinking, a selective route to survival or just taking advantage of water when available" I think snakes that drink from standing water are much more prone to contracting certain paracytic infections, shorting their lifespan, thus reproductive success. Snakes that scale drink, are drinking rain water or dew off their body, although not sterile, has a significantly lower risk of infection. I'm not sure how wide spread in the snake world scale drinking is but I imagine every species does it, the question is what significance does it actually have.

Cheers!

Al

Oh right I see, I thought that they down right refused to drink water from a bowl lol, not that you just gave them an alternative option.

It's an interesting theory, I might see if I can do that with my corns! Although I wouldn't like to try it with a hot!

Interesting theory

I have kept assorted scale drinking Tree snakes ATBs, Red Tailed Racers and Mangroves and had always assumed it was convenient and to avoid the risk of descending to ground level to drink - where predators might be more prevalent.

A friend kept several scale drinking desert species and believed it was the most regular way to get water in an area with little standing water or rainfall. Catch the morning dew on scales, rocks etc and suck it off. I had never thought of the reduction in infection/parasites.
