excellent snake, one question, why are you helping drink, is it recovering from illness or something, or are you just doing it because you can ; )

I have a postulate which I call "Scale drinking, a selective route to survival or just taking advantage of water when available" I think snakes that drink from standing water are much more prone to contracting certain paracytic infections, shorting their lifespan, thus reproductive success. Snakes that scale drink, are drinking rain water or dew off their body, although not sterile, has a significantly lower risk of infection. I'm not sure how wide spread in the snake world scale drinking is but I imagine every species does it, the question is what significance does it actually have. Cheers! Al

Oh right I see, I thought that they down right refused to drink water from a bowl lol, not that you just gave them an alternative option.
It's an interesting theory, I might see if I can do that with my corns! Although I wouldn't like to try it with a hot!

![]() I have kept assorted scale drinking Tree snakes ATBs, Red Tailed Racers and Mangroves and had always assumed it was convenient and to avoid the risk of descending to ground level to drink - where predators might be more prevalent. A friend kept several scale drinking desert species and believed it was the most regular way to get water in an area with little standing water or rainfall. Catch the morning dew on scales, rocks etc and suck it off. I had never thought of the reduction in infection/parasites. ![]() |
