Smile How do i find about getting a DWA permit?

I'm interested in getting a DWA permit/licence but don't have a clue where to start!

I live in Wales, so if anyone has any ideas of courses I need to go on, actual cost of license, etc, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks
Leanne

If you live in the Newport council district, I am afraid to tell you that it is the most expensive county in the UK for DWA and virtually impossible to get a license. The person to speak to is your local licensing officer for the council, but Newport is without a doubt, the no DWA zone! The cost in 2007 was almost £3000 a year in Newport, compared to £560 in Cardiff and just £80 in mid wales.

Omg! Well, I actually live in Newport and I can't afford £3000 a year. Why is it so expensive here? Rest assured I shall be ringing NBC tomorrow to find out why!!!

Thanks guys

Basically each council can decide whether or not they want to issue DWA and set whatever price they fancy on it. The higher prices are usually to deter people who aren't serious from applying. Newports price is high enough to stop anyone but the most very very dedicated person even considering it... cheaper to just move to the next county!

I am also told even if you have the cash they have an extremely tough vetting procedure and the money is by no means guaranteed to get you the license. I know a lot of unhappy reptile keepers in Newport because of it.

We definately need a national rate that is fair and reasonable.

I pay £154 a year and that includes the inspection fee.

NOOOOO!!!

if that does happen you can bet your bottom dollar that it's be no where near the reasonable fee SOME pay at the minute, I'd expect the fee to be set somewhere around the £1000+ mark. I'm quite happy with my £160 a year.
