Default Ray Hunter (Cobraman) reptile radio

Just been listening to this.... yeah hes always been a bit controversial with the free handling, but sounds like hes changed his position on it after that bite. I was really suprised listening to him here.. some interesting stuff too, talks about self immunisation, the recent bite (was a bad'un) and quite a bit of good advice... link below

Ray is a really nice bloke, hes down to earth and more than happy to help out, just as you said a little reckless, but he has his reasons.

I listened to it last night, interesting to hear Ray speaking about his keeping and the eastern diamond back bite.

Ray Hunter is a very nice guy, knowlegeable and a skilled keeper. I never have anything bad to say about his practices of the number of bites he sustains. He trained/worked with Bill Haast so his working style is much the same. Both people I respect quite a lot for their contribution to the field. When I heard of his very bad EDB envenomation I wrote this on TRR

I just want to say a few things about Ray and his situation.

Ray like everyone who keeps venomous snakes, knows the risks taken every time we care for these animals. Ray's a knowledgable pro regardless if you agree or disagree with what he does or does not do whith his snakes. Ray is valued part of OUR community, it's time to stick together and pull for him. It's easy for everyone to sit back & second guess what happened, how it happened and why. Plenty of time for that later when Ray in his usual open manner will discuss the situation with us. Everybody has and will make mistakes handling venomous snakes, everybody has close calls, the question will you be forgiven or will you pay a price. Let's be introspective, sit back, review and recap how each of us got into that bad situation and how to avoid it in the future.

Here's what one bloke wrote in response to my "Little Green Meanie" video

you deserve .to get bit but then again you might want to. just so you can post it on you tube

Nice people you have hanging around this site. Also not very surprising just a few condemed his comment, shame on the rest of you just let it go..

The part I don't understand is why people take exception to my videos/style, Ray walks on water..I get the wooden cross so to speak. Turning your back on a snake resting on the table get lambasted while "freehandling" a young Black Mamba is a "bit controversial". There is a whole lot of disconnect here....

Al, not to try to start another argument, least of all on this thread.

But there is a diference between free handling and and turning your back on a snake.

When ray had the snake in his hands, that snake had his full attention and concentration. If he saw it preparing a strike, tensing, becoming agitated etc etc then he could have reacted.

We both know that the mamba on the table would not have came and bit you, but it may have came over toward you to look etc. This could have meant you standing on it and being bitted etc.

My issue with that vid was not the turning of the back, i have left snakes on tables, perches and the floor/bed when i popped off to do a water bowl, or get a drink etc etc etc

My issue was that the snake had excaped and was loose in the room. You mentioned on another vid that you do a head count each night, before bed. That could have meant, should the snake be hiding, that it was loose in your room around you working for sevral hours. That is dangerous.

I still have alot of respect for you, and your ability/knowledge and still subscribe to you. I also respect your honesty in that "shit happens" and posting a vid when you, for want of a better term, f***ed up, and had a mamba escape.

Hope this isnt taken the wrong way, meant with all due respect.

As for the show, Ray is a God, and i cant wait for him to do another.
