anybody ever had a problem with ceramic bulbs?

i was lucky enough to be in the room at the time when it started clicking then glowing bright orange and it when melted the bottom of the bulb!! if i wasnt there it could of caused a fire! does this happen often? ive had that bulb for 2 years now working fine.
