Default Wild sphagnum?

I think behind our barn where it is like a shallow still rive there is sphagnum growing there. If it is sphagnum could i use it in my GALS tank? how could i clean it? Is sphagnum the only moss you can use?

When a large bag from the garden centre only costs a couple of quid it's hardly worth the effort of collecting it, especially when you don't know what bugs are lurking in it that you have to remove somehow.
