I would like to know how you go about building your own viv- ie, what type of wood do you use? What other materials are needed. What skill/tools are required?

contiboard wood , wood glue or screws , hole saw , vents , shash clamps , glass runners , glass , sealent , and just a few tools

there are all types of wood available to use, all depends on how much you want to spend.Most popular is malamine, can come in all colours and is easy to work with.Some will just screw straight through to join together, but the best way is to use screw blocks. If your useing other types of woods ie conti ^ mdf ply, i recomend sealing the wood with a water based none toxic varnish. The likes of mdf the dust is harmfull to humans, so i can guess it would not be so clever for reps..
glass sliders i found are cheaper to get from builders merchants 2m for £1.75 i pay. light fittings from maplin, they suply fittings for ceramic bulbs
which are cheaper than your local pet stores.
TOOLS- not alot. small drill, screw driver. for your cutting,if you measure it correctly most builders merchants cut to size. A job you dont need to worry about.

i got everything i needed from B&Q. conti board and cut to size too, i used things called corner brackets to hold the viv together and then drilled, made it much easier.

a site called pollywog do the glass runners for a few quid. a guy on here called 'jungleboy' sells ceramic heat kits for £23 for a bulb and all the fittings and mesh guard so PM him.

you need vents which are from B&Q i used these:

vents bottom ones on this page.

and you need a hole saw thing to cut the holes for them. its like a drill bit thing, and they sell them in B&Q too for around £5.

for the glass just wait till u get the runners in and measure it up and any local glazier should be able to cut the glass for you, i dunno how much as i havent got that far yet, but i dont think more than £20, i hope anyway. good luck
