Default Ceramic Heat Supply

Hi Everyone,

I recently got a Bearded Dragon and I'm keeping it in a former fish tank at the moment (The Beardie is only 12 weeks old), currently I have a spot light over it's basking spot, however, I'm planning on getting one of those Ceramic ones.

When I was in the reptile shop yesterday, we were going to get one of the Ceramic heaters there and then, but the person said that it would crack the glass. However, we then got home and realised that if it got hot enough to crack the glass, surely it would be hot enough to kill the lizard, and if we had the thermometer set to around 100-105 Farenheit then this shouldn't crack the glass.

Can anyone help with this and just let me know wether it will crack the glass or not? (Baring in mind it will be controlled by a thermostat)

Thanks,

Tom

Hi mate, theres always a chance of cracking the glass with any heat type, ive seen heat mats on stats crack glass tanks.
IMO you would be better with a wood viv.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Yeah I'm definitely going to get a wooden vivarium, I'm looking for one now, and when I find a good one then I will be getting it. It's just for now, as the guy in the shop said that a spot light will just go on and off, while the ceramic thing doesn't emit any light, and the heat just drops a little bit at a time.

We were just thinking that if the heat is so hot that it's going to crack the glass, then surely it would be harming the lizard? And we would keep it at a temperature that's good for the lizard, which wouldn't be so hot that it would crack the glass? That's what we've been thinking anyway, just thought I'd get other peoplpe's opinions on it.
