The old heat rocks gave them a very bad reputation. They used to be incredibly unstable and go up to 150f+ surface temperature, burning even your hands if malfunctioning let alone the reptile! This company I believe ceased trading (wonder why?).

The new Exo Terra heat rocks come with in built thermostat. However you can't adjust the temperature yourself - it just has a shut down mechanism if it perceives itself to be overheating past the internally set temperature. Although I don't use them personally, I have not heard anything about the exo terra ones actually malfunctioning or burning.

I am not sure heat rocks will ever get back the lost reputation from the disasters of 5-10 years ago though! At the end of the day they are a little gimmicky and even if they don't hurt the reptile, most won't benefit that much from it, as there should be hot basking surface areas created with an overhead heat lamp onto a rock and it'll do exactly the same!
