OK, Heres my understanding of Pulse Proportional compared to a standard Thermostat, Im sure i'll be corrected if im wrong as Ive only just recently started looking into these myself.

A Standard thermostat is an on/off device. It supplies power to the heat source untill a desired temp is met and then it switches off. Once the sensor has detected a certain drop in temp it switches back on again. And so on and so forth.
So as an example, if you were using this type of stat with a heat bulb you would see the bulb switching on and off all day/night.

As far as im aware a pulse proportional stat provides power to your heat source all the time but it reduces/increases the power supplied depending on the temp.
Using the same heat bulb example, you would then get a situation where the heat bulb was on all the time just at varying strengths to control the set temperature.

In conclusion I think the above suggests that a pulse proportional is more accurate than an on/off stat due to the fact that it doesn't have the operating range (the point that it switches on/off) that an on/off stat does.

Think im close to the mark with my explanation, apologies if im not and im sure i'll be corrected.

Basically, just set the temperature on the dial, and put the sensor where the you want that heat to be reached, and turn it on! The thermostat will pulse a current to the heat source (i've got it on a ceramic bulb, but think heat mat is ok) until the heat is reached and then keep it at that temp.

If youve got a day/night facility, use a timer switch on a separate plug, going into the side of the thermostat, to turn on at night, when you want the temp to drop. To change how much the temp drops, increase/decrease the knob on the bottom of the thermostat...bit complicated but IMO best type of thermostats!

Also, says on your signature your after an ATB and your in S Wales - you seen this ad? Think its in Port Talbot

a standard stat turns on then off when temperature is reached and back on when the temperature drops.

a pulse stat constantly turns on and off in short bursts to maintain a constant temperature.

a dimmer stat stays on constant but varys the ammount of power to the heater.

a dimmer can be used for light bulbs where as the others cant as the constant turning on off isnt suitable for the reptile and also shortens the life of the bulb.
