Default Placeing thermostat in viv

i have just bought a new thermostat for my new viv setup linked to a heat mat where do you place your thermostat directly on the mat for the most acurate temp or slightly above,i never usualy use heat mats as i prefer the infared bulbs for the smaller species of snake and with my large boas and previous albino burmese i used tubelar heaters and they worked a treat

barks a good insulator so don't think you'll need a lot of it.
what rep you using it on? you've got to think that if you use a thick layer then if your rep digs to the mat its gonna be a lot hotter then the surface where your probe will be.
