Default Dimmer Switches ....

Hi

Was just wondering if you could use a Dimmer Switch (the kind used for lights)
to set maximum temperature of a heatmat ??

Its ok for an emergency use but if the temps go up out side so will the temps in the viv .so be careful unless your there all the time i would not recommend using one.. you would be better off using a normal house thermostat than a dimmer tbh ..

check the specification of the dimmer as well, you could find a mat is below the required wattage for it to function properly.

Yes and no.

Yes, you can limit the maximum amount of power supplied to the heat mat.

No, you can't control the precise temperature.

You're basically telling it "You can have this many watts of power".

That number of watts means a different temperature if your room's 50 degrees than it does if your room's 90 degrees.

A thermostat does one better - "you can have the right number of watts of power to keep you at THIS temperature."
