Can you not change the fitting for a Ceramic one (couple of £'s off ebay), then it'll take 100w bulbs?

Yes it could quite melt, I know I have a plastic one and has 100W reflector bulb in and doesn't blow or doesn't melt but does get very hot, best bet if your worried get a ceramic or a porcelain one.
