There are 277.42 cubic inches in a gallon. The nominal size of a tank is taken from the three outside tank measurements. Multiply the three measurements by each other, then divide by 277.42.

The actual size is the inside measurements, front to back, and side to side, and is less than the nominal size. Hope that helps!
