Default Tub Guide

There are 3 main types of tubs used for reptile keeping and they are

1.Contico

Very similar to RUB’s but unfortunately I cannot find any info for these boxes on their site
2. Sandwich or food storage tubs inc ice cream tubs

These can be bought pretty much anywhere but ALWAYS make sure that the lids go on nice and tightly as snakes in particular WILL try and prise the tops off

1.Really Useful Boxes (RUB’s)

My sig directly goes to the RUB site as they are adding more sizes, and you can get them at Argos, Rymans, Staples etc

4. You can also get contico and RUB copies from most stores as well but check the locking lids before you buy.

Preparation of tubs.

I tend to use a very mild and weak bleach solution and thoroughly rinsed out with boiling water then cooled boiled water.

You need to add ventilation as well and to do this you can use 2 processes, 1 is to drill holes and 2 is to use the hot tip of a soldering iron, obviously be careful with both ways and if using a soldering iron make sure you are in a well ventilated room and it can really smell.

With drilling if you can use a fast drill and start with your smallest drill bit and work up to your target size as this reduces the risk of the plastic cracking and you getting annoyed with that 1 crack in your perfect tub

You can either drill the lid or sides, I tend to drill the tops of RUB’s as you can buy replacement lids when you’ve finished with reptile use it will turn into a standard box again.

They are great for racks (as in the contico pic) and for feeding, and cleaning out tubs, shed hides and quarantine as they are so easy to clean.

Heating you usually put a heat mat (ALWAYS WITH A STAT) under the tub

and use an accurate thermometer to measure the temp properly inside before you house your reptiles in them, one this is done and you’ve decorated to your specs your really to move your rep into the tubs YAY.

You missed out a couple of really commonly used boxes, the half flip lids ones and the candbury ones, both used regularly for hatchlings, Plus really useful boxes ideally need the lids sorting out to stop the risk of strangulation(there was a thread on here pointing to another forum where 3 members had it happen). Usually involves putting backing board under the main lids to close the mouldings

I must confess I had not come across those boxes and I was really doing the thread as a newcomer to the hobby and not a breeder, is there anyway to re-edit ??
