Default meercat group size

I know meercats live in groups, we have two groups of maybe 15-20 individuals where i study, in fact their planning on adding some bat eared foxes into one of the groups, no idea how thats going to go.

Anyway, i was wondering what was the best group size. I know you have a dominant male and female, but how many other family members would make meercats happy little critters?

Also if you were to breed them, then are pedagrees important enough to have to know exactly which male is behind it. I know only the dominant male and female are supposed to breed, but there have been evidence of sneaky goings on before. Any ideas?
