get all the info you can before even thinking of getting a baby.
Hedgehogcentral is by far the best forum as americans have kept aph's for much longer than we have in the uk.There are almost 2000 members there.
With as much as almost 20 years experience in aph's.
Use all the sources of info you can

They smell no more than any rodent as long as you keep them clean. Obviously a lot of mammals do have a certain odour, but I have found them quite good for going to the bathroom in the same place and keeping themselves clean, so all you have to do is keep the cage clean and well ventilated and you should not have a big issue with smell. You can buy any large indoor rabbit type enclosure that is fine for a single (and wouldn't recommend keeping more than one together anyway). The largest rabbit cage I've seen is around the 4 x 2 size, with a ramp onto a second level. As for toys, well they are very very inquisitive, but they (in my experience) aren't that bright so I would give cheap toys that they can't hurt themselves on. If using a wheel, one that does not have any bars or areas the can get hurt, and one that can't be toppled over... as for toysone of my females toys is actually empty toilet roll tubes, great to stick your nose into apparently... and get stuck on your head and run around with They also seem to love shredded newspaper, and routing around. I provide livefood as an exercise/entertainment/treat.. chasing livefood, burrowing/digging for it, foraging... stop them from getting too tubby and provide mental stimulation.

Average price, £100-150, but can be more... there are colour morphs that are more expensive than others. Get them as young as possible, the older they are if not handled the less handleable they will be ultimately. If socialised they should be friendly and handleable, although they all do have distinct personalities that vary greatly. My snakes behaviour is much the same across 100+ snakes for example, but every single one of my hogs, and their babies, have all had distinct personalities, behaviours and traits.

They are a joy to own and increasingly rapidly as pets both in popularity and availability.
