Default African Pygmy Hedgehogs on BBC News

The story is coming on shortly, I'll probably be away by then and I can't find it on the BBC news site but the wee preview said 'these are becoming very popular as pets, but should they be?'

Thought APH keepers might want to check it out.

Sorry I can't provide more details!

In todays Daily Express A letter from animal aids campaigns officer Kelly Slade asks Have we not learned anything from introducing foreign species to Britain? Promoting aph's as the next must have pet is grossly irresponsable as owners will soon get bored of their spiky companions and turn them out into the wild to fend for themselves.Followed by more drivel along similar lines.
What mz Kelly forgets is that the previous releases of animals into the countryside (wild boar and mink) were perpetrated by these terror groups almost leading to the extinction of the water vole. How two-faced can you get? Harry

you would have thought by now people would just leave animal owners alone. someone should really make a stand. and make it public knowledge that the rspca is full of pooo!.

i can see the rspca's point about fashion pets but at the same time they dont seem to be more interested in bringing down responsible owners/breeder rather than tho's who will just have thrown em out in the cold by next winter

Well the RSPCA think all pets make bad pets, cats and dogs included most of the time

Mine are far easier to look after than my cats or dogs that's for sure, certainly no harder than looking after any rodent such as rats, rabbits, guinea pigs - in fact a bit easier if anything!

I hope that a day comes when breeding can match demand, they make a much better pet than most animals that are sold in reptile stores, it's just a shame that they are not perhaps the easiest thing to breed which is why prices remain high.

Considering you are going to pay £80-250 for an APH depending on the age, sex, and colour... and they don't have long lifespans, I can't see that many people chucking them out on the streets...I think the RSPCA should focus on worrying about finding all the cats & dogs homes than making outrageous predictions for the future of other species.

The APH is not a foreign species, it's actually a totally new species that does not exist in the wild, it's a crossbreed between 2 african species..we're not technically introducing a foreign species, we've created an ideal pet species I'm guessing that would be a whole new moral debate for the antis though.
