Default Aph

Hi,

Im after as much advice as possible on APH's if people can help?

I have been reading up on them for a while now, so im not going into this blind.

One question that keeps coming up with the other half is do they smell?

They will be being kept in the house so it is important.

There is loads of care sheets on sugar gliders saying they do not smell but i have witnessed there smell first hand lol.

So im just checking if the hedgehogs smell much.

I know about there diet and where to keep them ect.....

Any help would be great.

John

Do they smell more than nothing? Well, yes.. they do... all rodents do really, some sort of smel is fairly unavoidable. Do they smell really bad? I don't think so, as long as kept clean, I mean, strangers can smell I keep rodents when they enter the room, but I've never had anyone say "oh my god this smells really bad", but you do need to keep on top of it and clean them out regular. I think mice smell worse myself.

Basically I wouldn't say they smelt any worse than a hamster or other singular pet rodent as long as cleaned regular.

Are you planning on giving your Hedgehog a wheel? Because THAT is what will smell!! I find that when mine don't have their wheel, and they have to poop in the shavings, they don't really smell.
But when they have their wheel, they poop and wee in it. And it is that, that really stinks! Because there is nothing to help soak up the smell!

Do NOT give APH wheels, it can and will lead to a kinked spine, give them space and time to roam about for excercise.

Hi

If the wheel are big enough 11 to 15" it will not affect their spines. The only problem is that they may get too attached to it and when you take it out to clean it they may get upet. So if you put one in their every other day they would be fine, and you won't get any wheel rage.

i find that mine does smell if not fully cleaned everyday. I get up in the morning and remove his litter tray clean that out and replace with fresh litter, Then i clean his wheel, his bowl and his water bowl and bottle. Then i remove his fleece blankets that i keep him on and replace these with fresh ones also. Them put all his things back in and change his toys. After all that is done he doesnt smell. So i find that if i do all the cleaning in the morning they dont smell for the rest of the day only through the night when your in bed anyway.
I would say that they dont smell half as much as a hamster if cleaned out properly
But i find the full cleaning every day a little tedious thats the only bad thing that i could say about them. They are cool tho

I have three APH now and i find there is hardly a smell.I spot clean every day and do a full clean once per week, and find this does the trick...

I have also taken the wheels out of the cages.
