Are they rare as a species?

Its a good question in some respects.

A few years back it seemed that the market was teeming with Jerboas, Lessers, Greaters and Four Toeds, occasionally Five Toeds.

There are probably quite a few tucked away in private collections up and down the UK, whether they be in pairs or singles, they are there. they do come up for sale, and ironically l see they now come up in auctions, which l would have said was relatively rare to begin with.

In Europe they are maintained very well albeit in much smaller enclosures than we think they should have over here - the end result in a smaller habitat is that they breed more prolifically.

Over here we tend to keep them in vast space and achieve no meaningful results.

I used to have about 3 - 4 pairs of both Lessers and Greaters, and l think l only saw results from my Greaters with not so much as a boo from my Lessers! LOL

Also, l think that because they did not produce many results for some keepers, they were sold on, moved on, bartered out, swapped over.

I do not see many sold anymore, although this is not saying they dont come up.

About a year ago someone offered me some Desert Kangeroo Rats, which turned out to be Greater Jerboas. So at times, they may be there, but research undertaken may not be optimum, and they are either sold as or swapped over as a result by someone not knowing what they were to begin with.

But are they rare to collections - probably more so now, than back in 2002 - 2005.

FYI

these are now showing as available on a certain cambridge based trade suppliers stock lists..

both greater and lesser.. they are however quite a bit more than £4 and i would doubt they are uk bred..
