How old is your young primate?

Judging by all accounts he is only young and very small.

I take it you got him at a young age and have continued to hand rear?

Sorry but while I agree he is "cute" (not a word I agree with placing on primates) I feel it is rather irresponsible of you to keep a lone monkey in a home envirnment.

How do you offer him the social infrastructure and psychological needs he can gain only from being with his own kind?

It is commonly known that primates live in groups and thrive well this way. Do you not feel at all bad for putting him in a situation which is not beneficial for him?

Don't get me wrong, I keep animals just as you do but I genuinely do not agree with primates being kept solo in a "pet" envirnment. They are not what I would call a companion animal and I don't beleive they should be kept indoors as you would a cat or dog.

I am sure you offer him very many aspects of what he needs but some things just can't be attained int he environment you have him in.

Rant over - sorry to go off on your thread but I felt I had to voice my opinion and have been minld to wehat I know some other members here would be like

I must agree,he is very sweet and lovely, however to keep primates as "pets" in a companion way is just plain wrong, and he looks very very young to be away from his mother.Sorry.In my opinion, the removal of ANY primates from the DWA lists was a terrible idea.

While in general I agree with you, not all primates need to live in groups. I personally have no idea if marmosets do or not so I didn't comment (plus I got told off after one of the last primate threads)

If marmosets do require it then yes, it's disgusting IMO, I have no idea if they are among the solitary species or not. I struggle to see how anyopne can meet their (primates) demands in an "average" house.

Marmosets live in pairs or family groups,in which only the dominant pair breeds.Basically they live as a family.

Social environment
Companionship is undoubtedly most important for captive New World primate. All species have strong social needs; they have evolved complex modes of olfactory, vocal, tactile and visual communication. Furthermore, as much of the behavioral repertoire is learned from other conspecifics, appropriate social housing is of paramount importance for the development of young animals.
The type of social grouping in the wild should be used as a guide for social grouping in the laboratory in order to ensure optimal group compatibility and reproduction.

Taken from Housing and Handling of New World Primates

Another good read for anyone interested is this Marmosets may carry their sibling's sex cells - sex - 26 March 2007 - New Scientist

It explains the "germ line chimerism" which marmosets display with regards to their DNA and geneitc make up and states

Quote:
In an evolutionary sense, Ross says, chimerism may promote the system of social care by increasing relatedness between fraternal twins just as the increased relatedness in social insects such as ants and bees is thought to underpin their social system.

Cool.

I agree with you completely, I just didn't personally know if it applied to marmosets or not so I didn't comment.

hopefully this monkey will get adequate care, housing and attention. but that is, IMO, very hard to do.

Don't get me wrong Mason - I do beleive primates can be well maintained and kept in captivity but there are certain settings they require before thier needs can be met.

The changing of the DWA was a load of tosh for me. I know it is there to protect the public as opposed to the animal but who is supposed to monitor the conditions primates are being kept in?

And for the OP - please don't feel I am diggin personally at you because that is not my intention I just don't agree with shops and breeders being able to sell lone primates into pet homes - they need companions of thier own species and suitably sized outdoor enclosures which mimic thier natual settings as best as can be acheived
