Default Some exotics pics from this xmas

well, this xmas, i was a lucky girly.. TSKA needed to get some pics of some of the critters our clients have available.. and seeing as i enjoy photography, and don't mind getting grubby, playing with animals, and waiting for hours for the right shot.. it was a good excuse for me to go and meet some animals i have never met before!

so, these ones i thought i would put on first... where's pendlehog.. i know this one might not be the right one for you han honey, but i thought you might at least like to see the shots.. as you can see, at first i was outside the enclosure.. once the genet was used to me, or at least a bit more used to me than he was to start with, i was able to go in with him for a few more pics.

so.. first off from outside!

fast little guy he is!

*zooooooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmm*

*ohhhhhhhhh visitors eh!!!*

*uh huh.. and now you want me to smile eh!*

*how's this?*

*oh, ok, i guess you want me to move from the doorway whilst you come in eh?*

*i'll sit over here, you stand over there... sure i can pose for a bit*

*yep, i am stunning i know... but don't praise me too much.. I'm a shy little fella really*

isn't he gorgeous!!!!

lol, no, i would not think so either.. i kept a respectful distance from him, camera has a good zoom tho *grins*

i did meet some more cuddly ones... and some species you would never think of as "cuddleable"

like these.. these are Aboreal Anteaters.. Tamandua..

bought by a client of ours from another source, who has since welched on the original agreement they had, they are only available as our clients missus threw a hissy when they arrived...

granted their dinner is not the nicest looking, or smelling... but the animals themselves are amazing! the female is SO friendly, the male is built like the proverbial brick dunny, but is also quite friendly too ! the power in their shoulders and forearms is incredible..

again, amazing animals, a treat to meet.. you can see in some of the pics, the HUGE front claw they have for ripping into ant nests and so on.

female

kisses with her daddy!

male, just look at the power he shows in his forearms and shoulders

dinner.. they love it.. the male sticks his nose in..

and the female stirs the bowl, gets it everywhere, and then sticks her nose in

see her stirring it here?

and the male again, hard to take a pic when you are holding the camera and he is trying to climb into your lap!

amazing animals

oh hannah don't.. in the flesh it was even more awesome... i tried to do it the barest amount of justice with the pics, and managed to capture a small amount of the beauty, but my word.. yes.. stunning.. totally stunning..

and i know! the anteaters! there is another couple of pics somewhere i have lost, will post when i find.. the female is the more cuddly of the two, the male is a little more "bullish" ! he nearly got onto the roof of the enclosure - as in the outside not the inside... trying to get him down had rory and the owner both hoppy around the garden lol lol lol

these next ones are not available, but were worth taking some pics of none the less.. again, amazing animals.. their noses.. oh my.. they are great they really are!!

these are prehensile tailed porcupines, again, not really pick up and cuddle material tho!

not the tail, this porcupine species is an aboreal one, hence the prehensile tail..

and the nose!!!

one let me touch its nose very gently (i'm not into prodding them to see what they do..)

but the nose.. gosh.. felt very very wierd.. even more so than it looks!

very funky little guys, smaller than i thought they would be for some reason..

ta easty & Si

angi, they are eating anteater gloop... lol.. it smells a little like fishy fruity mush

hang on i will find the diet break down..

basically its a captive mix, both these animals are used to a captive diet, or rather, this captive diet.. the female is 7, the male is younger.. i think the isle of wight zoo has one thats 17 years old. although the care sheets and care info say they live to about 9-12. problem is of course, not that many are kept, and its only relatively recently that they have worked out how to keep them well, so the life expectancy given is a lot less than it really would be, as long as you look after them correctly.

being ant eaters, their captive diet has to be thought out and balenced correctly, for instance ant eaters are haemophylliacs (spell?) so they need vitamin K supplement powder to keep their blood from not clotting if they are cut at all.

anteaters have no teeth, so they sort of lap, sort of suck it up

this is what the gloop is made up of, the owner makes this up fresh daily, and they LOVE it..

100g leaf eater pellets,
30g feline pellets,
4teasp peat,
1 tomato,
1 banana,
1 apple,
2 teasp honey,
15g hard boiled egg with shell,
100g minced beef,
40g porridge oats,
600ml water,
2 shrimps/prawns with shell and head still on
and 1 lg pinch of vit k

and thats daily, to be blended and fed as a paste!

found the other two pics..
