Average lifespan for a wild rat is 13mths in captivity they can live upto 36 mths but that is not the norm. Most captive bred ones here don't make it much past 22mths, certainly wouldn't be breeding past 18mths.

ahh cool, think mine were about 6 months old when i got them, and have had them 6 monthsish now too, so looks like they wont be breeding anymore more now, i have a hold back female, who im waiting to get to 6 months old(as iv heard thats the best age to start breeding) and bought a lovely champaign hooded female the other week, so if they retire i still have the one, and the lil one growing.
the ginger one only had 1 litter, but they husky and white must of had about 10 litters each. Although the husky is still fading into white on her back end and nose. |

I retire mine at 13 to 14 months, same as my breeder mice.
I set up cage with animals about 6 weeks old. The cages are marked with an expiry date 12 months in advance. After 12 months the breeders are replaced with some 6 week old mice or rats. Stephen.
