Ok my new female has had 5 babies, dont seem much compared to the otheres.

I had to take her out of themain female cage as they all started beating her up, do you think she got stressed from the move and ate some of the litter?

Rats are not known for eating their offspring through stress (unlike hamsters!). However, they are known to eat the babies if they die of natural causes - instinct to remove anything from the nest that might attract predators!

Do you know how many offspring she had in the first place? She might just have had a small litter.

I know that pearl rats carry a double lethal gene that makes their litters small as the babies that carry the gene die before birth and are reabsorbed.
Maybe others do this as well!!!!!!!

I recently had a rat give birth to 17 kittens but all except one were already dead. I fostered the survivor as she wouldn't have got milk trhough with only one. She didn't eat any of them she was trying to nurse them all it was so sad to see.

she is champaign hooded rat, i dont know how many she had, it was in the night, i found she had 5 pups when i first saw them there.
