desert locusts at any stage before they moult into their adult form with full wings. just to confuse the issue, it can also mean young mice or rats that are nearly weaned.

When I say "Hopper" I mean "Mouse that's in the 'flea' stage of development".

When I mean "not an adult winged locust" I say "Small/medium/large Locust".

This has led to confusion at least once at my local shop, when I asked for five hoppers and got five medium locusts. Fortunately, I made the snap decision my geckos wouldn't mind having some locusts and that I had enough mice to go 'round at home. Saved me some embarrassment explaining the above.
