Default mouse questions

my female is pregnant again wooooot, just hope she does not eat them again! was quite sad the last time

Is it ok to change the bedding ect.. still when babies are born? dont they kill the babies if they smell differnt?

I have a large water bowl in the cage with them, when babies start walking, should i remove it? and use a smaller one? in case of drowning?

I use a large one, coz they tip the smaller one up all the time, and then i have to clean them every day.

get a water bottle, much easier, bowls are really hopeless for mice to be honest.

when the babys are born just leave well alone for a week, dont even peep, and dont clean them out for a couple of weeks. some mice are happy to have you poking around and cleaning out when they have babys, others will panic and eat their babys, so its best to assume that they will eat them if disturbed, and just leave them to it, as hard as that might be.

You can always make sure you clean a couple days before she pops, and if she ate them before yes, leave well alone for a while.

Sometimes I just clean the rest and leave the nest, especially if it's a first timer.

yup, they will smell hon, but its tough .
you can put vanilla essence in the water, that helps with the small a bit, as does using pelleted wood cat litter in a layre under the bedding.

you could put a few stones in the water bowl to stop them drowning, mice and hamsters tend to kill there babys if they have a strange smell, id recomend breeding gerbils (as pets or feeders) if you can though as i find them much better, iv handled EVERY litter from few days after birth and NEVER had a gerbil eat a baby, the males are also better fathers than other rodents and its recommended to leave them in with females! also because there kidneys are rly effective there urine doesnt smell nearly as bad as other rodents do, they also start off nice and small for baby ball python but can grow to the size of a XL mouse for my adult carpet python, my snakes seem to take mice and rats fine after eating gerbils but iv heard gerbils can be addictive to snakes and sometimes they get picky and only want gerbils, if your ever near glasgow i cud give you a breeding coloney of gballs for free

iv not tried gerbils, i didnt even know you were allowed to feem them gerbils, as iv only heard of mice and rats, and chicks.

How come most people dont use gerbils? is there enough vits in them for gerbils as the only food?

Id love them but i live very far away let me know if you ever travel down here, and id gladly have them

i know in the states you not allowed to keep and breed gerbils in alot of places due to worry of them infesting, but am not sure why more people dont use them here, i know alot of people use them for WC(or bad feeding) ball pythons as sometime they wont eat mice or rats but will take gerbils no probs, think its cos they smell more like there natural prey, im not sure about the natural vit/mineral content of gerbils but id guess they were a little bit more fatty than mice and a little less than rats, although thats just my guess! i feed mine alot of fresh food and sometimes get them to eat reptile vitamins before i well....put them to sleep. They make such sweet pets also which is the main problem i find using them as feeders, if am down southwards il def bring you down some got a freezer full and about 50 alive (in seperate coloneys) getting some really amazing colourations from selective breeding too!
