idealy you want a 5X per hour flow rate on a filter. that is it should have an hourly flow rate 5X's the capacity of your tank. you have i'm guessing a 30 gallon or so sized tank. unless it's heavily stocked... which is what i like to do with malawi's, 150-200 GPH should do the job. malawi's love and need frequent water changes.... weekly, 25% or more. don't forget to vaccum that gravel. at 185 GPH that filter should do the job. but you can't have too much filtration really... hope this helps.

on sand?.... alright. i think that with the number of fish and the tank size that filter should do the trick. i would personally have a second filter with it... a hang on tank filter like an aquaclear or penguin would be a nice boost to your water quality and insurance in case the big one fails for some reason. the more bacteria the better in my book.
