Default Fishy help please

I have a shoal of tiger barbs and 3 danios with a major problem with fin rot!

We have had the tank for well over a year now and we did all as required when first setting up. We began the tank with a small group of danios and with no problems what so ever! After introducing the tiger barbs around a year ago i keep getting reoccurring fin rot. The danios don't seem to be greatly effected by the fin rot but the tiger barbs are dropping like flies. In the past month I have sadly lost two of my lovely tiger barbs. My step dad takes charge with the main upkeep of the fish and he has been using a treatment recommended by our local aquarium and done all they have asked but the fin rot keeps coming back.

We have a shoal of around 13 tiger barbs now with at least 40% of them suffering the effects of fin rot.

Any ideas would be greatly welcomed.

Thanks

Hi there,
I keep koi carp but i think fin rot is caused by the alkaline level being to high in your tropical fish tank, i did suffer with this when i used to have tropical fish and i used tap water adjuster from a pet shop and it seemed to do the trick.
Do you Have a water testing kit with the PH charts?

I meant to ask... what is a comfortable ph level just neutral?

fuck me where do people get their information from !
5.5 is far too low for any of the carp/barb family.
You will cure your fin rot by regular and i mean weekly water changes .
I would be inclined to use protozin as a treatment if it is advanced.
Tiger barbs do not like old water ,it needs to be refreshed on a regular basis .
20 percent a week will do the trick.
Altough in your instance i would be inclined to do a 50 percent change as soon as possible.

Like i said my step dad takes most of the responsibility for the maintenance such as cleaning and treating any occurring problems such as this fin rot, he is currently using a treatment that he bought from an aquarium - not sure what it is chemically though as he would know that. Where could i get this protozin? does it have a commercial name or is it just protozin?

Thanks for the advice on the water changing. i shall let my step dad know what to do asap.

is information about the ph levels available on the internet reliable or should i consult the library?

as you can guess i'm more of a reptile sort of person lol.

don`t consult the library follow my advice.
protozin is the actual commercial name of the cure .
i think you will find though that the water changes will do the trick on their own if enough are done.
a pH of 7 is low enough for most types of barbs ,they hate acidic water .
