Default Reed Fish

Anyone know if the reed fish Erpetoichthys calabaricus is available anywhere in the UK? Been after some for a few years now but never known where to get them.

I've had plans for a specialised tank for them, part tank, part vivarium so they can (if they so wish) climb out of the water for a bit.

I'll draw up some plans later to expand on that...

But anyway, has anyone here kept these awesome fish?

I kept them years ago, once established they would take floating pellets from my hand.Lovely fish im after some more soon.I had 6 in a large fish community and actually saw them spawn , but the other fish polished the eggs off quickly.

Not to offend but the vivarium part of your planned build would be a waste of time and money. They aren't going to spend time out the water unless they accidentally find a gap in the lid, jump out and die.

There usually readily available, although saying that I'm having troubles getting new stock of them at work now, suppliers seem to be out of stock at the moment.

try using Tropical Fish Finder.co.uk - The ultimate UK fish keeping resource for all types of tropical and marine fish, including fish books, articles, fish shops, fish clubs and more.

If your set on a palardium (sp!) archer fish would be a great display fish with a forest affect above, set free a box of crickets in the 'forest' and watch the archers do what the do best.

Although with most species of archer being brackish you would have to save reedfish for another tank.

Apparently reedfish tollerate some salt in their water, they live in river deltas sometimes, and near costal floodplains.

I'd have to check that though

The hollybush garden centre always had them when i worked there. They (and most other places) should be able to order them for you at no extra cost. Reed fish at the hollybush were 6.95 each - I remember specifically as I was thouroughly pi**ed off when I found mine on the floor at the bottom of the tank - all dried out and curled up it must have gotten out of the smallest gap ever so if you do get one/any - please make sure there are no hole whatsoever.
