how long as the nitrate been high for???

there isnt a dead fish stuck somewere is there (know it sounds trivial)

have you done anything new to your tank recently???add new fish???

i would cut feeding down a little maybe to once a day, that should be fine. stick some cucumber in there they should munch on that and it wont alter any water parameters.

there is a tetra product on the market called nitrate minus, might be worth a shot if you cant get it down. have used it successfully myself and seemed to work for me

funny enough i have used all sorts of gravel cleaners but sand just gets sucked out and into the bucket even getting blocked in the pipes An invention is needed in sand cleanin i think. That could make some 1 alot of money

daniel:-nitrat been there for just over a month now i took all rocks out incase of dead fish but the girlfriend knows all the fish she even given them names lol

no. in your juwel filter there are several different sponges

blue-coarse and fine
black-carbon
white-polypad
and you can get a green one which is a nitrate removal pad.

another good filter media you could use is a polyfilter, not to be mistaken with a normal poly pad. its an ammonia/nitrite/nitrate removal pad. a bit pricey but does the job.

will view the thread in morning off to bed now

going of the subject abit but what african cichlids have you.
also what are you using to test for nitrate.
sand is a problem when doing water changes mine were a nightmare
what i did in the end
rough up the sand ( which also eliminates the build up of gases which could become harmful ) then use the gravel cleaner to suck up all the crap which is floating around the tank above the sand.
i also used a net with tiny holes in i scooped up the sand shook the net sand fell out left crap in bottom of net.

Like already said, water changes are the main solution with any nitrate problem in a tank.Small changes daily for a couple of weeks should get the levels down, its often a problem in heavily stocked tanks such as Mbuna.Nitrate removing resin in your filters will help-i think there are some rechargeable ones on the market. You could try planting some java fern, usually tough enough not to get shredded and will help absorb nitrates.
