First off you'll need a tank!! the bigger the better as it'll make it easier to keep the water sweet!!
You'll need a heater or two (depending on the size of the tank)
You'll need a filter...........I just happen to have two for sale in the classifieds(Pick up from gloucester though)
A water conditioner.............and water!!

A air pump.

Once you have all that the most important thing is paitents!!

I think there is a good sticky here about fishless cycleing. That is very important.

I think thats about it!!

As well as the biggest tank you can afford, don't skimp on the filter. Get the best you can.

What are you putting the tank on? Make sure it is strong enough if its furniture or if its a stand alone tank, you'll need to buy or make a stand. In the fish shops you can buy special squidgy stuff to put under the tank to make sure the weight is spread out but you can get cheaper stuff from diy stores - can't remember offhand what the OH uses.

First fishes (after the cycling etc) - what do people think of something hardy and algae eating like a common bristlenose. Hardly exciting I know but you may as well get the workers in first.

well my nan has something that the water from the tap runs through, then by the time it comes out of the other end its got the nitrates and stuff so if you fill the tank with that you come put the fish in straight away. though obiously youd leave it a day to settle.
thinking of getting a pleco and something similar to neons which ashmashmash suggested as apposed to neons.

I've just sold all my fish and in the process of selling the tank.
I used RO water, not tap as I could just put in without messing about, agree you need a really good filter and keep it clean, heater, gravel (also used pH balancer coral sand and never had problems with the levels), decor/ornaments, plants.
shrimps to clean, apple snails for algae, loaches to keep snails at bay, you can get really nice cheap fish, all mine were gorgeous colours but none cost more than £2 each!! tetras are nice and so many species, guppies and platies are easy beginner fish
