depends on the shop, where they got them and what size.
Buy them bigger if possible as they are much hardier. If they are from a good supplier and nearly fully grown, around 1.99 each. The cheaper ones are often ok, but are usually from less high quality wholesalers. and avoid pets@home fish. The suppliers they use are the cheapest they could find, which means a huge compromise in the fish quality

damn, i was going to go to pets@home today, but i think i might just by the tank from there and get the fishies elsewhere. will have a look at the cardinals, my other half's always wanted some from when he was about 2 and i thought it'd be a nice gesture as he's just started a new job and needs a bit of destressing.. watching fish x |

In a simple terms as i can put it, when you put the water in the tank for the 1st time, it needs time to settle and over time, an eco system of (good) bacteria build up which is essential for healthy fish and a healthy tank. Some species of fish are alot more tolerant to 'new' water than others, so you want to start off with 1-2 fish like Platys, Swordtails or mollys or guppies (a good fish shop will be able to advise you). Gradually, you can add more and more fragile fish until you have a nice strong tank. The fish in the set up actually contribute to the microecosystem (bacteria and algae etc) so you cant just wait a mnoth and then go straight for the fancy stuff.
Cardinals and neons, most people will reccommend arn't 'new' tank fish, they can be fickle, so get a couple of colourfull hardy fish (Swordtails and mollies are fab and v.pretty) then in 2-3 weeks you're tank could probably handle the neons. My local shop actually has just come up with a really good key system where they label everything with a letter, then have a big blackboard explaining the stages you should add the different group fish in.
