Default Fish Temperatures

Can anyone tell me the desired temperature for Guppies and Tetra's. I was given advice on about 25 degress but all the pet shops I have been in all have them set at 28 to 29 degrees. Just a bit confused thats all.

Tetras and Guppies are ok with a range of temps. Some Tetras are ok to as low as 18 degress, most range from about 22 to 28 degrees. It all depends on the species. Guppies are ok between 18 and 28. The temp differences you mention are within the normal range for tetras.

It is important however that when moving fish to a new tank, the temperature is adjusted gradually so as not to shock the fish. The may have a range of temps but do not like rapid changes in temp.

shoot for around 25, its high enough for the tetras and guppies to thrive, but not too hot so your heater is on permanently

I have discus, and my temp is usualy at 30, and tetras dont tend to last in it. I dont keep tetras anymore because of that. Guppies can withstand a warmer temp though, but i think they prefer it around 25-27.

Have you tried cardinal tetras with your discus? I had quite a bit of success with them when I kept discus.

@The original poster. I'd say that around 26-27 is a reasonable temperature to keep most tetras and guppies at.

you keep your discus at 30? can i ask why, i used to have mine around 27 at most, they seemed to prefer it. I had no successful spawnings at 30 but i had them like clockwork at the lower temp

30 is what i have read also. And i though the higher the temp the more chance of breeding! OBVIUOSLY not OTT hot!

I keep them at 30 because they are less likely to have health problems at that temp, and also i am not trying to breed, i dont have the facilities for it. Its probably about 29/30 actually now i come to check. I also keep plants in there that prefer it warmer.

fair enough. But i've had less disease problem with the lower temp. Plus my plants thrive at the lower temp.

But hey if it works for you,
