Default Baby fish

Just been seperating the various species outta my fry tank. (all baby fish go into the 8 foot baby tank until i can recognise what they are) Painstakingly counting each individual of each species. And well, Currently I have 1237 baby fish from 27 species. 426 being green terrors lol

What do you do with them? Do you sell to aquaic shops or to private breeders or both? (Just being nosey!)

Good luck with them all.

i keep quite a few if i have space. But the majority die anyway. It's just part of natural selection, the weakest die and i tend to lose around 60%. I then grow them on to a reasonable size usually once i can sex them, and then i give most away. I want to encourage people to keep some of the bigger cichlids as they are some of the most rewarding fish to keep. Obviously the rare stuff or the very specialised fish are sold to people who i eiher know or can prove how they will be keeping the fish ( i like to go and see the tank first). Very few of my fish actually end up in aquatics shops. and then it's only ones i know and trust.

If i give them to breeders it's ones i know of, and we have a little unspoken rule about sharing babies anyway. These guys will all get first pick on the fish and i get the same when they breed theirs.

edit- and just as a little note, if you ever get into this sort of thing and make friends with other breders, it pays to help them out if you can. Sometimes something special turns up and if you've treated them well they are often quite happy to help you out as well. This was hw i got my peacock bass.

Do you cull your fry or do you just let nature take its course?

i let them get on with it. Obviously if theres a problem which could affect the rest, or if the fish is suffering i kill it, but other than that i find you get better fish if you let them kill off each other. survival of the fittest and all that, every fish gets an equal chance
