buy a sponge and scrub the inside glass, it's the only effective way imo

Those cheap ones you get from pet at home work the best iv'e found, all you gotta do is buy some razor blades to go with it.

depending on the depth your hands still might get wet.

Edit i just re read your post

I tried those algae magnets and found them to be a bit rubbish plus if you accidentally trap a bit of grit between them, you scratch the tank glass...

As mentioned above, a good algae sponge and a bit of elbow grease is the most effective method IME also - in my non-Oto tanks that is.

I splurged out on 5 of them today.
Actually, I splurged out on about £60 worth of fish.

dont mean to sound eh well a know it all, but have you ever thought of moving the tank some where sensable and you wouldnt have the issue of algy?

im sure you know that its not really the best idea to have the tank in direct sunlight, not only does it cause a build up of algy (which you are currently moaning about) but it also causing the temp in ur tank to flux which can stress fish out and also puts extra stress on ur glass and silicone holding the tank together.

maybe you should think about stopping the cause instead of treatin the problem?

If you are only after a strong magnet to use with a pad earth magnets are strong or even the magnets on the back of a set of speakers
