very odd no shop needs personal details, may ask for name and postcode if buying stuff with garrentee, but other than that all they need to ask is about your tank and how you mantain it, next time refuse to give details and if they refuse to sell you fish find another shop,

i was going to say..lol.. Sounds a bit extreme... Most shops dont een take your personal details when your buying a reptile, some of them dont even ask you anything about your setup or if you know anything about the reptile your buying (the bad shops imo) Mabey it's just store policy in that shop though *shrugs*

I take personal details every time someone buys a reptile.
The council told me to do it this way when I get a license. If i know someones name/address/email/phone number I don't always get them to write it themselves, but I write it in my book.. The council last inspection insisted on seeing this book and would have failed me if I didn't have it. It's not a law for the UK, but some councils will be instigating it for ALL sales of live animals now, and I guess that could count for fish. Why would you refuse if you don't have something to hide! I was told it is for disease control, with the new panics about bird flu, etc. people are starting to wonder what would happen if other animals had contagious disease that we don't currently know of... how would the sold animals that are possibly diseased by traced? Therefore, in order to contact all owners should a contagious disease be found in the establishment I have to take at least one method of contact per purchasee.. even if it's just an email address it's better than nothing. Luckily for me at least 50% of the time I either already have the details of the person, or have spoken to them over the internet and have an email address and/or phone number in advance. Seems a bit extreme for fish but i personally don't think it's a bad idea. Funny thing is I don't have to do it for inverts in fact because they are not covered under the pet shop license... there is no legal license required for selling any invertebrate on a business premises... if I had to do it for a spider I would have to do it for every box of crickets too, lol. I still like to do it ![]()
