i looked up what a stingray filter is... i've never seen one... are they those tiny things?

now to figure how many gallons 35 liters is...
oh!.. a ten gallon...

... very unforgiving a setup if you ask me...

i'd slap either two small aquaclears on there or one larger one... like an aquaclear 30...

AquaClear Aquarium Power Filters

Quiet, efficient and reliable Aqua Clear 30 pumps 150 gph. Recommended for aquariums up to 30 gallons. Aqua Clear stands alone as the only aquarium power filter that offers the integrated filtration of the CycleGuard Insert System. Aqua Clear combines the largest volume of efficient filter media in individual inserts with the powerful water flows from the free floating impeller. Alternate replacement of the CycleGuard inserts ensures continuous biological removal of organic toxins can be achieved. The waterfall style output from the Aqua Clear filter agitates the surface of the water while creating beneficial currents throughout the entire volume of the aquarium. Both the surface agitation and the rotational currents bring more water molecules to the surface, in physical contact with the atmosphere, enabling them to release carbon dioxide and replenish oxygen more efficiently. In addition, the constantly moving water currents do not allow dead spots to occur in the aquarium, eliminating the possibility of thermal layering. Water input per hour is regulated by adjusting the patented flow adjustment mechanism, tailoring the flow rate to the aquarium's requirements. When the flow adjustment reduces input, the water returned to the aquarium is still equal to input, but the top grid in the filter basket circulates purified water back into the motor chamber so that the pump filters 150 gallons per hour even when adjusted to siphon less. Water may be filtered more than once without reducing the actual flow rate of the pump unit. The Aqua Clear 30 actively draws dirty aquarium water through the integrated siphon/strainer assembly into the pump impeller chamber. The flow diverter directs the powerful water current from the impeller chamber under the filter basket. The water is forced to move through the provided filter media and then returned purified to the aquarium. Aqua Clear Power Filters are designed to fully exploit the benefits of removing aquarium wastes both mechanically and biologically. The recommended CycleGuard filter media, when used and rotated as suggested, ensures that both mechanical removal of particulate matter and biological filtration of ammonia and nitrite combine for proven beneficial results to all aquarium inhabitants. Aqua Clear's unique CycleGuard system offers maximal amounts of time proven filter media to perform the assorted purification jobs required for optimal water conditions in the aquarium. CycleGuard inserts break the water stream into many ever-changing channels, passing through the entire length of media before being returned to the aquarium. The CycleGuard Media Step System provides extremely effective mechanical debris removal. The screen size for particles reduces with each step, trapping the large particles first and the fine ones deeper in the chamber. The Step 1 Foam traps larger particulate matter before it can clog and block other inserts. Step 2 Ultragrade Activated Carbon adsorbs liquefied wastes and color bodies and traps fine debris escaping from the foam. CycleGuard is unique--the inserts are designed to be replaced alternately, conserving slowly replicating beneficial bacteria and enhancing the natural reduction of ammonia and nitrite. All inserts provide valuable sites for bacterial colonization. The strong water flow ensures adequate oxygenation through the entire filter chamber volume. Biological filtration is continuous with the CycleGuard system. Bacterial populations left after regular maintenance seed all new media very rapidly, keeping water conditions stable and safer for fish. Free Step 1 and Step 2 media are included in the box!

I am just about to give up on this tank. Ammonia has been 0.5 for weeks with no change. After my last post I did a full water change clean out then added small amount of pure ammonia. I added a bottle of tetra safestart. Still no change in ammonia no sign of nitrates or nitrites. I will consider looking at buying another type of filter but that does mean I am paying again for a filter. Any other suggesttions?

What does a "full" clean out mean?

If you've cleaned the filter, you're starting all over again.

If the filter is working, and has media in it, then just wait. If you want you can drop a water sample into your local fish shop and ask them to test it, to make sure your test kits are reading correct.

Are the heaters on and everything?

It was a full water change and gravel clean I did not clean the filter. I have an api master test kit and the tank is a cold water tank for goldfish (35l) if this is any help.

Don't clean the gravel, it act's as a filter too.

Yep, just wait. As I say, if you're not entirely sure your result's are correct, take a water sample into your LFS, they'll probs do it for free

Have you tested the KH/GH of the water? Sometimes a low KH can cause the cycle to stall...

What is KH GH and how do I test for them. Is it something to do with carbonate in water ie. soft/hard water

have you tried leaving the tank for a couple of weeks, doing nothing to it at all to let nature take it course. obv if you have fish still its a bit different. The stingrays are normally fine not the best but do the job so to speak. Also have you had your oxygen levels checked? If its low that can effect the bacteria in the filter, they need it to survive as much as the fish do. The other thing have you changed the carbon baskets in the filter they are meant to be changed every 4-6 weeks if you dont the carbon releases all the "crap" back into the water, again effecting the ammonia
Sorry if i hsve repeated any info others have given but if not hope this helps a little

I would suggest u buy a cheap sponge filter/air pump in combination with the filter u got i find it cycles quicker that way on my big tanks i got the external filter and a large sponge filter i always go for a filter thats rated over the size tank u have got u cant go wrong that way u just got to make sure the flow is not to fast for the tank

Exactly. GH is general hardness and KH is carbonate hardness and indicates your basic water chemistry e.g. my KH is 0 out of the tap and about 2 in the tank which means I have to buffer the water every week with bicarbonate of soda to prevent a pH crash...
