Post Some advice...

Hey,

I am getting a tortoise in 9 days and cant wait! However, i was talking to a friend of mine who has a few pets her self but her cousain has alsorts from loads of tropical and cold water fish to lizards etc. We have had fish before but they kept dying and we didnt really have much luck.

However, she was telling me all the kinds of 'normal' pets i could have as she you know doesn't really think tortoises are that interesting and it got me thinking. Fishes can look aesthetically pleasing and to have a smallish one in my room with a few, easy to look after pretty fish in it would be nice for my room...

So can any of you come up with any prices for tanks and some fish etc. and how much it would cost because i dont want something really expensive but i want to be able to prove to my parents that with whatever alterations and that i could have a nice set of long lasting fish in my room in a relitavly small tank in my room...

Thanks

Mike

Id suggest reading up on the nitrogen cycle-if you can understand that most fish are a doddle to maintain.Really you are keeping water and bacteria, the fish are the easy bit.

It can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be really, from coldwater fish with plastic plants to a planted tropical tank to 12 foot marine tank which I was reading about earlier in a guys home which cost him well over £6k 12 months to look almost done and the sump and protein skimmer plumbed in his garage out of the house.

You can get a small tank with the complete set up for around £100 and plentu of tropical fish for around £1-2 each.

If your having second thoughts about a tortoise its probably not worth jumping in feet first as they can out live you and they are a life long commitment.

no i am not having second thoughts about my tortoise i can't wait to get it! I was just wondering on something maybe which is quite cheap yet can be really interesting to watch and can be a lovely addition to your room. Also, i quite like all of the feeding and cleaning out etc. as i find that like a nice responsobility to have.

Is there anything i can say to my mum which would make her change her mind and which might give some fish if we got some a nice long life

THanks

Mike
