Hi Rick, thats a lot of beardies. Your food bill must be through the roof, no wonder you want to breed your own. Bear in minf though that it takes 2-3 months to get large nymphs to adults and the get them breeding it also takes about 3 months to grow a new born Dubia onto feeding size so you will be waiting probably 6 months before you are is full swing.

As for numbers, adult female dubias produce about 30 babies every 3 days. assuming your beardies eat 5-10 roaches a day, you will need 100 odd roaches a day. that means 3 -4 adults giving birth each day. This equates to approximately 120 adult females. That said the above is at ideal producton rates, so you'd probably want a few extra females, so say 150. Nymphs generally mature into equall numbers of males and females so thats roughly 300 nymphs. It is best to keep them at 1 male per 3 females, so extra males can be fed off.

My guess, base on the above "back of an envelope calculation" is that youd need at least 300 - 400 nymphs to get a colony going but it would be at least 6 months before it would be self sufficient. That said, it is well worth it as they may great feeders.

I sometimes sell extras that I have but at the moment, my collection is eating all I can produce. Hopefully someone else will have some available for you. Feel fee to PM me of post in this thread if you have any other queries. I have done up a care sheet that you may find usefull. If you want a copy of it, PM me your email address and i'll send it on to you.

Duzzie

Rick, have you given your beardies dubias before only that mine wont touch them but will eat lobsters which is a bit strange. I could sell you 100 Dubias but they will be mixed sized nymphs. I dont like to sell adults as i cant guarentee the age and i dont want people to end up with old spent out roaches. Pm me if interested 100 = £20.00 + £3.oo P+P paypal only...

In my opinion, Dubias are the best. That i why I opted for them.

Dubia can not infest your house. They will not breed unless they are in constant temperatures in excess of 26 degrees. Any escapees may survive in the summer months but unless your house is constantly over 26 degrees, they wont reproduce, therefore cannot infest.

Not sure about Lobsters as I have never kept them, but as far as I know they breed at lower temperatures and therefore could infest. Lobsters are also good climbers whilst dubias cant climb glass or smooth plastic. Dubias are therefore less likely to escape, further decreasing the risk of infestation.

Yep, thats about it, problem with lobsters is their ability to climb and i find myself feeding one at a time which is a pain, but oddley my beardies won't touch Dubias. Go for Dubias,,,so much easier ...

I have only ever heard of one other person that has a beardie that wont eat Dubias, so you are not alone. It is a pity as they are good food. I use my Dubias to feed my 3 Beardies, Tegu, BOSC, 30 odd Tarantulas and 3 mantids. I am just so glad that I dont have to use Cricks any more, now they are horrid things.
