It makes life so much easier if you have a number of broad categories - Agamids, Monitors, Geckos, Skinks etc.
I'm not really interested in wading through a dozen posts all badly headed (usually omitting the species ie "Help my lizzzzids sik")to find those related to Bearded Dragons only. It's probably a pain setting up (I know it was on another forum I mod.) but once running works well.

i think the way it is now is fine, but if you did do separate sections it would have to be very few sections

I think a lot of problems with a specific species can be generalised to other species with similar requirements, especially those to do with housing or general physiology etc. e.g. someone who's experienced with beardies is able to help a monitor owner get a nice, hot basking spot for them.
I don't think separating the sections into subsections would help that much - look how often people post "HI DOES MY CORNSNAKE LOOK OK TO YOU?" in an existing thread in the lizard section etc... The more sections you have, the fewer the number of people who will frequent each subsection, and the longer you will have to wait for a response. Unless it's something highly family / genus-specific, there are a lot of people in the lizard section who can give good advice on a lot of problems across a lot of species, and there is usually at least one person around on the forums. A "monitor" forum might go for a day or two with no-one checking it who is able to answer a question asked, when there are actually plenty of people online in other "subsections" who are perfectly able to give an answer to the question. |
