Friday RFUK Planned Down Time

Hi all

This is due to the RFUK server move.

I have completed testing; the database was successfully moved to the new server for testing purposes (all 731MB of it) and there seems to be no issues with it or the vbulletin script running. I will therefore be preparing to do a final push which will include moving the RFUK domain to a new registrar (non essential at this point but needs to be done) and changing the DNS to point the domain to the new IP.

If all goes smoothly, there is no reason this cannot be completed within 3 hours. Unfortunately last time this was done the site was down for some people for between 12 & 24 hours, this was due to the migration of DNS settings across the Internet. However, the move to a new registrar I have planned should prevent this... as changes I have made concerning other sites always happen very quickly with them.

YOU MAY NEED TO RESET/CLEAR YOUR COOKIES IF YOU EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS LOGING ON.

The planned down time will be Bank Holiday Monday, everything will be completed in the morning and I hope the site will be back on line for all by Midday. In the mean time, please dont panic.. go for a walk, phone a friend, get a roast on... we will be back before you know it and will be all the better for it.

On a side note, there is a new version of this forum software available which I will be upgrading to shortly. This new version has all sorts of new features including Social Networking profiles and lots of stuff that should be pretty cool... watch this space.

T-Bo..

for all the ones who'll struggle to go out into the real world during the downtime; is it possible to give the new IP address so it can still be accessed during the DNS update..

I can leave the old server open during this time, but obviously any posts made would be lost... I guess I could go through and set it so no new posts could be made on each forum, I wonder if this would cause more confusion on the whole though.

As I said I dont anticipate much of a wait with the new registrar, other changes I have made with them always fully take effect within 30 minutes. Backing up, moving, and importing the database takes over an hour so shouldnt really be a problem.

I will have a look though at leaving the forum open as 'read only'.
