Default First dart frogs

I dont normally post in the phibs section, but I love these little froggies so I wanted to show them off;

Also got 3 D.Azureus tadpoles cooking. My first try at growing 'poles into frogs, so fingers crossed all goes well

Nah, it's only a temp set up (orchard bark, plastic plants, water bowl and some hiding areas) until my planted viv grows in a little more. Will get more pics when they move into the new place.

Aw hun their gorgeous good luck with the tads! i dont need to tell you how tricky raising them is but ive got everything crossed for you! Just a little note - is that a food or water dish in their setup? i wouldnt have any standing water with dartfrogs as they can drown very easily (yes, they really are that daft..) im sure they'll do very well for you!

Cheers,
it is a water dish, but it's only there to collect some droplets of water when sprayed, so there's no real depth to the water. (how can an animal that has to be constantly moist be so inept at living around water :S)

I always wondered that ive got first hand experience of a dart frog drowning in 1cm of water in a bromeliad vase... they fail at being a frog!

I agree most darts are cr*p swimmers, and there have been cases of them drowning, but I think its one of those subjects that could get blown out of proportion- a bit like the lizards impaction subject.

I have multiple tanks of darts, and only ever had one die, and that was a weaker specimen in a large group. They all had territories; her's was right on the waters edge by the front trough.

All my tanks (and lots of other keepers / breeders I’ve visited) have bodies of water, including a friend who has patricias living on an island. His were actively swimming across the water to the front stepped vent when they saw the feeding cup near the glass!

The thing you need to make sure is there is an easy exit for the frogs from the water, and check there is other places for the to hop and hide (I know of people who have had young frogs hiding under water, and I have a 2 week old froglet in the room next door that does exactly that).

I have always had bodies of water with my darts and never had a problem. In fact my tincs spent most of the day either climbing the waterfall or siting in 2 inches of water. A lot of the dartfrog breeders in the U.S and Europe have large bodies of water and even keep Killie fish in them.
