Hi there.
I wanted to find out if anyone on here has had their white's treefrogs try to mate with another species of frog or even crossbreed? I've got a white's tree frog and a northern leopard frog in the same enclosure, a very large paludarium I am experienced at keeping mixed species tanks, to begin with they completely ignored eachother which was fine. Both are eating well and the white's is about a 1/4 of an inch longer then the northern leopard, but the leopard frog has started following the white's around the tank. not aggressively so, but whenever the white's is still the northern leopard frog goes and sits next to it. (sometimes touching) it has also started to emulate the white's. It now climbs into the branches with it and sleeps during the day. They're both young frogs and I'm not sure when they become sexually active, but now I'm not so sure. If anyone can tell me why this is happening I'd love to know. Cheers. |

I never said I wanted them to crossbreed.
And mixing, as I said, I've had experience doing it before. All I want to know is if its a possiblity that they might try to mate later on. I wouldn't want them to damage themselves by trying to mate with a different species. |

there is speculation that cross breeding can occur among only certain species but successful hybridisation is rare and only known within similar species types. often even the spawn isnt fertile and where a successful mating does occur the offspring of these hybrids are nearly always sterile.
im really not sure wether the 2 species you are keeping together are going to be safe risking a possible mating or not. see i even avoided the mixing species topic lmao.

im quite pro mixing and i dont want to sound like some jackass but doesnt a leopard frog need a much cooler viv than a whites treefrog?
but to answer your question im fairly sure if mating happened it wouldnt prove fruitful Last edited by spend_day; 02-09-2008 at 09:35 AM.. |

As I said before its a large paludarium.
There's even a cool end and a less humid end for the NLF. But he/she (haven't sexed them yet) seems to like being in the warmer more humid end of the tank above the water in the branches. I'm pleased that no-one thinks they will have offspring last thing I want is to end up with a bunch of hybrids. My WTF doesn't seem at all fazed by the presence of the NLF and is eating healthily so I don't think it's bullying either. |

Hey an update on the white's tree frog and the northern leopard frog.
Both have developed quite well and are getting quite big now. They've both carried on as before and have both been eating well. Had a disaster two weeks ago when my cricket's escaped and I couldn't get any more for another three days, but we all pulled through that one. Fortunately both of the frogs are the same size and are residing together peacefully. Haven't seen any further hints of my origional fears and infact the NLF seems to have re-established himself with a territory further up the bank inside a lilly which I've got growing there. Thankyou to all of you for your advice I'm feeling alot more competent about caring for my two frogs. |
