Bloodworms. chopped earthworms, pinhead crickets or fruitflies would be your best bet.
with the exception of breeding season smooth newts spend alot of time on land a damp woodland style set-up would be best a large water dish filled with dechlorinated water/spring water changed daily. substrate needs to be something that holds moisture well eco earth, microwaved potting soil, etc are good. not gravel and sphagnum moss can cause issues with some species of newt/salamander (dunno about smooth newts). keep it cool and moist daily/every other day misting should help with this (again dechlorinated / spring water). they need places to hide and kept out of the sun but otherwise dont really need anything too fancy. and remember keep it cool (nothing above 21/22C if possible)
if u dont mind me asking how did u end up with a smooth newt
