Default Alpine newts

Iv seen sum in a shop near me they look great just intrested in there care i av a spare 10 gallon tank size 18" long x 12" wide by 18 high i know thwy need 50/50 set up and need no heat do they need a filter? If so i ave an internal1 if so how do u stop the force from being so great? Any advice would be greatful ta tom

right well a 10 gal could house a pair and i wouldnt recommend a 50/50 set-up i would go 30/70 (land/water) or more as they are highly/totally aquatic and adults dont really require a large amount of land if any (a quite a few keepers i know keep them entirely aquatic) water depth needs to be at least 6 inches with the more the better kinda attitude. like alot of newts juvi's can go through a terrestrial phase

a filter (if one is used) needs to be a low powered one as strong currents stress them out, you could disperse the flow with rocks or a plant over the output nozzle


keep under 23C under 18C being better

Thank you very much a large stone above the water line would be fine then if i ave it at 1 end with the filter behind it to stop the current would that be ok what about plants and Uv?

UVB is not essential and honestly this isnt a species i would bother putting it in for due to there high aquatic nature and UVB not really penatrating water.

some plants in the water (real or fake) is probably a good idea just to give the newts something to swim round and hide in

no? most plants use light from the visible specturm
