Hi, im doing some more resarch on fire bellys and i came across this care sheet. Is this true the plastic part- Only handle the toad when cleaning the tank. Use latex gloves to take it out and put in in a container that is NOT PLASTIC - the chemicals will harm your toad.
How to Care for Fire Belly Toads - wikiHow Its just i bought a large plastic Flat Faunarium - Large 46 x 30 x 17cm. I do have an extra exo terra terrarium i could use. |

I keep three fire bellies. handling them is fine as long as it isnt too much. i handle mine every couple of days and they are fine. one of my FBT's actually enjoys a tickle under the chin! but it all depends on the temperement of the toad. one of mine is quite jumpy so i handle him less.
as for plastic containers there should be no reason why you cant put them in a plactic container. when you buy them from shops they generally put them in a plastic container. the plastic wont leak toxins unless you melt it or something... but i doubt you will put a toad in a plastic container of boiling water.... that would be silly. having them with tree frogs is quite silly too. simple things really. tree frogs are arboreal and fbts arent. Fbt's love to be in water - tree frogs dont. fire belly toads secrete toxins! tree frogs skin will absorb it! oh and another thing about the gloves. that isnt a problem either. fire belly toads toxins arent that bad. wash hands before and after handling. wash with water that is dechlorinated... (i have a spray bottle of declorinated water that i use.) the toads will ONLY secrete the toxins when stressed. no stress = no toxins. hope this helps. (also should not be kept with newts as the wriggling of the newts tail attracts the toads to have a nip. they wont damage them but they will stress them) Hope this helps!!! |
