Thumbs up Productive Horned Frog Questions

Helloo.

I have decided to buy a horned frog. I've got a spare 8 gallon long tank for it; and enough fertilizer free soil as substrate for a while, i've added a water dish and a few broken logs covered in moss that i found. I've opted not to use UVB light as i dont feel it's essential; instead i'm using the existing florescent fish tank light.

Here are the questions, any help is appreciated

1. I'm using a spray bottle for humidity, when do I know when the right level of humidity is achieved without a humidity gauge?

2. How neccessary is a heat mat in the summer? when the light is off at night temp reaches about....22-24, and in the day the light gradually heats the tank to 28-29C.

3. What cheap/household alternatives for feeding are there? instead of crickets and pinkies etc, which are store bought.

Thanks very much

at those temps, you shouldn't need a heat mat. as for the feeding question, there really isn't anything else that they would eat i'm afraid.

you will need a humidity gauge really, just to be sure on the levels, but a good spray once a day is usually enough (depending on the set up)

yes i think the best idea is to opt for that florescent light, not the other which is not necessary.
i heard that pinkies are probably the best for horned frogs as they love to eat!
other than that i think you have it sussed!

You may find that the frog isnt likely to take pinkies straight away as it is likely to have been raised on crickets and other bugs. I personally would only feed pinkies as a treat, as i consider them more like a 3 course meal for a toad. they should have crickets, locusts, mealworms. mine gets four in morning and a few in the evening. its still only tiny.
you need to judge how much they eating with whether they are getting fat or not.

I just put crickets in her tank and watch as she goes and eats them, its great fun to watch, she has brown or black medium sized crickets all gut loaded/dusted with vitamin powder as a treat i will tweezer her a pinkie, but she isnt very keen on it yet as its still new to her to be fed in this way.

Hey guys, i bought a pacman today, the woman was helpful with info, i now have a question, would using my standard fish tank florescent tube emit too much light for the frog? and maybe stress it out as it's too bright?

i dont use a light for my toads as it can dry them out, and if its an albino it can cause blindness, i image you could use it for short periods, depends on the wattage.

congratulations on your purchase!! post a piccy!! have you named it?
