Default British Newts?

I know great crested newts are endagered but i was wondering if anyone knows how to keep other native newts. And also are palmate newts yellow, because i saw a newt that wasn't a common newt. found under a rock in southern scotland.

Ive also caught alot of smooth newts that where yellow / red!

do not say it was a different species it was defo a smooth

and until you get a fair bit of experiance with amphibs i wouldnt go taking them from the wild try keeping some fire bellied newts or something first

as far as i'm aware we don't have palmate newts up here

first newts i kept were commons, found them to be really hardy and adapted readily, providing you keep them properly of course...

i'm sure there was a thread like this before with some good tips, will try and find it for you

EDIT: there ya go http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/amphi...t-up-care.html

yeah you can keep smooths and palmate newts, there's also some colonies of italian crested and italianxgreat crested newts about which while legal to keep you have to be very careful you can tell the difference.

smooths need a cool terrestrial/woodland style set-up outside of breeding season not sure about palmates i would assume a semi aquatic but i couldnt be sure.

there illegal to sell or trade tho (well wild caught and any direct offspring of wild caught are) release can also be an issue.

you definately get palmates in scotland, earlier this year i was a volunteer keeper at the highland wildlife park and set up an amphibian project in conjuction with the parks education centre to display native amphibians and raise awareness for the global decline of species.

and it was the palmates we had no problem finding, the commons were the illusive ones (rather ironically)
