Default newts laying in pond :)

Hello

I don't usually post here as I'm usually in the shelled section but I just wanted to tell someone.

I just spent a good 4 hours watching one of the female smooth newts in my garden pond laying eggs! I'm thrilled! She started yesterday I think, although I didn't see her lay she was out a lot and hanging around the weed, but now she's definitely laying.

How exciting!
Just got to hope the other newts don't eat the eggs! Do newts do that? I saw 3 others hanging around near where she was laying....

other newts will sometimes eat some of the eggs, but hundreds of eggs are layed so it will be fine.
If you take a close look Im sure you will see quite a few larvae already swimming around in the pond, as the newts will have been laying for quite a while now.

I have been looking but not spotted any larvae yet. They didn't have any weed to lay on until a few days ago so perhaps that may have delayed things - do they always need to lay on weed?

Just went to try to get some shots of the female who was laying but she's not laying at the moment.
I did get a shot of 2 of the other newts though

I love newts
